The War Begins:
•The war begins with the conflict at Great Meadows (Fort Necessity) in 1754. In June, George Washington had to retreat from the French force.
•To strengthen the defence of the colonies the British General Edward Braddock set out with 1400 British Regular troops and 450 colonials to try and take Fort Duquesne.
•Braddock had been warned by Benjamin Fraklin to watch out for surprise attacks by the Indians, but he did not listen.
